LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — More than 30 shelter dogs and cats departed Las Vegas early Monday morning for rescue partners in Salt Lake City, Utah, where they will have a second chance at finding homes.

The Animal Foundation sent 28 dogs and cats on a flight from North Las Vegas Airport at 6 a.m. Monday. Animals from Henderson also were loaded onto the plane.

The transport comes as the Animal Foundation heads into its busy season and faces overcrowding. The shelter took in more than 50 dogs last week from two cruelty cases.

“This allows us to free up space and focus on the animals who need us most,” said Kelsey Pizzi with the Animal Foundation.

Some cities have more adopters than available animals, according to Pizzi.

“We free up space because we’re overcrowded, and then these animals go to Salt Lake City where they can find loving foster and forever homes,” Pizzi said.

Cities that crack down on spay and neuter and microchipping have fewer animals in shelters, Pizzi said.
