LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Another Big League Weekend is in the books, and with both games selling out at the Las Vegas Ballpark, the event served as a springboard toward Las Vegas officially becoming a Major League Baseball city.

A second consecutive sellout crowd on a perfect day for baseball watched the soon-to-be Las Vegas A’s rally to beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-4 on Sunday.

Tommy White belted two home runs, and highly touted outfield prospect Henry Bolte crushed a two-run shot to left-center. Bolte, who played 34 games for the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators last season, said the stop in Southern Nevada has been a welcome break from spring training in Arizona.

“Spring training is fun, and Arizona is a great place to be, but it’s long, and it’s Groundhog Day,” Bolte said. “To have something special like this and come out to this unbelievable ballpark and facilities, this is a great way to split it up.”

A’s manager Mark Kotsay said the continued progress on the team’s future ballpark site near the Strip adds to the excitement every time he visits Las Vegas.

“Obviously, it does feel like you’re getting closer with the progress that they’ve made,” Kotsay said. “If you go over on Tropicana and Las Vegas Boulevard, you can see the actual formation of a stadium and the lower bowl. So we’re definitely making progress, so I think coming here and seeing it makes it feel like it’s closer.”

Longtime A’s assistant general manager and director of player personnel Billy Owens said weekends like Big League Weekend help energize the entire organization about its move to Las Vegas.

“This year it feels great to be here,” Owens said. “We’re gonna be here playing six regular-season games here this summer, you can officially drive to the Strip now, and 25 percent of the stadium is done. We’re gonna be officially here full-time in 2028. We’ve got a good team on the field — you saw that in the second half last year — and we’ve got stars around the diamond. Vegas is a true major league city, and we can’t wait to be here.”

The A’s are scheduled to return to Las Vegas in June for six regular-season games at Las Vegas Ballpark — three against the Colorado Rockies and three against the Milwaukee Brewers.
