LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – It’s the final week of the Athletics in Oakland as they begin their eventual move to Las Vegas.
Monday, the team’s owner, John Fisher, penned a letter to the A’s fanbase urging them to keep following the franchise.
Fisher says it’s been a storied 57 years in Oakland; 4 world series titles, 6 pennants and 17 division titles.
Fisher says when he bought the team in 2005, his goal was to win world championships and build Oakland a new ballpark. But he couldn’t find a home in the Bay, and said he only began exploring a Las Vegas move three years ago after signing a binding agreement with MLB to ensure a new home.
In his letter, Fisher says “I can tell you this from the heart: we tried. Staying in Oakland was our goal, it was our mission, and we failed to achieve it. And for that, I am genuinely sorry. Looking ahead, I hope you will join our beloved A’s as we move forward on this amazing journey.”
The team has 3 more games at the Coliseum — Tomorrow through Thursday against the Texas Rangers before 3 road games in Seattle. The team is missing the post season.
The team will play the next 3 seasons, at least, in Sacramento in the ballpark that’s home to the triple-a Sacramento River Cats.
The team is hoping to move here to Las Vegas in 2028 in a new ballpark built on the site of the Tropicana, but they can stay in Sacramento if their plan to build a new stadium is delayed.
Demolition work at the tropicana is underway after it closed in the spring. There are plans to implode the Tropicana on Oct. 9 at 2:30 a.m. The Tropicana’s owners and the A’s are planning a commemorative event that morning.
The event will feature a drone show and fireworks ahead of the blast. Clark County says the implosion permits are in the review process.
