LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – FOX5 continues to follow what is happening with a trapeze built in a backyard in the Paradise area.
Last month, Renato Fernandes went to the Paradise Township Advisory Board asking to get the backyard trapeze permitted but several neighbors showed up saying the apparatus connected to their shared back walls violated their privacy. Fernandes agreed to take it down in 30 days.
“I’ve done flying trapeze for 25 years. I’ve broken some records. I’ve been a world champion,” Fernandes reported.
Some neighbors in Shadow Hills near Russell and McLeod reached out to FOX5 saying they love the trapeze.
“We really enjoy it. Our friends and family that come over think it is amazing as well,” Lorri Talcott shared.
Others who spoke during a community meeting where Fernandes was seeking a permit say it’s been a nuisance for the past two years. One neighbor sharing a compliant they made with the county back in August 2022 shortly after they say the trapeze first went up. Though Fernandes has now promised to take it down by September 13th, skeptical neighbors say they will only believe that when they see it.
“It is an eyesore. It does bring property value down,” said one neighbor who did not want to be identified.
FOX5 visited the neighborhood Friday evening. From the street, you could see the structure is still standing tall but there are some noticeable changes. Nets that were there a few weeks ago have been removed but there is still a lot to be taken down by next week.
“Personally, I don’t want to live in a neighborhood where I am under the yolk of a gigantic rule book,” neighbor Grant Talcott contended.
The Talcott’s say the trapeze adds character to the neighborhood, something uniquely Vegas. It was something that was special.
“We will be sad to see the trapeze go,” Lorri Talcott added.
FOX5 did get an update from Fernandes who continues to promise everything will be taken down by September 13th. Fernandes says since our initial report, he has had a lot of people offer land to relocate the trapeze.
He hopes to have it back up and running sometime next year.
FOX5 asked the Paradise Township Advisory Board what happens if he doesn’t take it down by next week. They said since he volunteered to take it down, there is no order in place. However, any future complaints would be checked out by code enforcement.
