LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Eligible taxpayers should soon see a $1,400 rebate showing up in their bank accounts.

Bad actors know that they’re waiting to rip their victims off.

Here’s how it works: A text message will be sent claiming to come from the IRS. It links to a fake website that asks to verify personal information in order to get payment.

Those sites then steal personal and bank account information.

People do not have to do anything if the IRS is owes Rebate Recovery Credit. It’s issued automatically.

The agency says it does not send texts about refunds or payments. It never asks for personal details through text, email or social media.

A reminder – unfamiliar links, QR codes, and attachments can all lead to identity theft.
