LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A woman accused of severely injuring a 13-year-old boy, then leaving the scene of the crash, had her first court appearance Thursday afternoon.
Yarla Valeriano-Perez, 27, was approaching a school bus with its lights on and stop sign arm out when she neglected to stop, police said. Investigators said she hit a student who had just gotten off the bus. The crash happened on Wednesday at Amigo Street and South Abbeyfield Rose Drive near St. Rose Parkway and Maryland Parkways.
Valeriano-Perez originally fled the scene and abandoned the vehicle, according to an arrest report obtained by FOX5. She would later come back to the scene of the crash. That’s when officers arrested her.
In court, a Clark County district attorney said the child was thrown eight feet in the air as a result of the impact. The teen boy was transported to the hospital with “substantial injuries.”
A public defender told the judge that Valeriano-Perez has no criminal history and works as a property manager in the valley.
The judge set her bail to $300,000, considering that she left the scene, but also taking into account her return to the crash.
She is facing three charges, including overtaking a stopped school bus with its warnings displayed.
Valeriano-Perez will be back in court on August 26.
