LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Some of the best-trained dogs in the world are converging on Las Vegas this weekend for the K9 trials at South Point on Sunday.
In an exclusive live edition of FOX5′s Behind the Badge segment with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Sgt. Eric Hutchason showed FOX5 how his partner, named Arco, handles obstacles.
“Some stairs, some uneven ground, narrow walkways, some windows, high jumps — stuff like that, just to make sure when we send him in real life, he can do it,” Hutchason explained. “We want to make sure he can go over uneven surfaces and be confident when we send him to do different types of missions.”
Dogs won’t just have to complete obstacle courses in this competition, which is in its 33rd year and brings out K9s from departments all across the western U.S.
“There’s a lot of bite work that they do,” Hutchason said. “We’ll send the dog to fight through a bunch of different obstacles to get to a decoy in a bite suit.”
Doors open Sunday morning at 8:00 at South Point, with the event starting at 9:00.
