LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Biden Administration announced Friday an 18 month extension of Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans and Salvadorans, providing relief for nearly 800,000 individuals living in the United States.
The decision allows recipients to remain and work legally in the U.S., offering temporary protection from deportation.
Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, a longtime advocate for immigrant communities, expressed her support for the extension while emphasizing the need for comprehensive immigration reform.
In a statement Senator Cortez Masto said:
The TPS extension for Venezuelans and Salvadorans comes as these communities face ongoing humanitarian crises in their home countries.
“Legally these individuals that I am talking about really qualify to be here and be a part of our economy, Senator Cortez Masto said. “In Nevada and across this country and it was important for the administration to take the legal action that they could now to protect them from the chaos that is coming from the next administration when it comes to immigration.”
Just Thursday, Senator Cortez Masto introduced her first bill of the 119th Congress, a border security reform bill aimed at balancing national security with humane immigration policies.
Nevada Senator Jacky Rosen was also happy to address the extension for immigrants.
According to officials TPS has been extended through 2026.
