LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Students at Hewetson Elementary School got an early start on Nevada Reading Week Thursday morning with a “Bikes and Books” event that put free books in the hands of more than a thousand children.
The Clark County School District Safe Routes to School Program partnered with Spread the Word Nevada to distribute the books.
Getting books home
Jennifer Grube, CCSD Safe Routes to School Coordinator, said access to physical books is a key goal of the event.
“Not a lot of students actually have books or a library at home,” Grube said. “So it’s super important that we actually get physical books in hand so that they can take home, read with their parent, their brother, their cousins, their grandparents, and really spread the joy of literacy and knowledge.”
Bike and scooter safety
Local cycling clubs also participated in the event to teach students about bike and scooter safety.
Students were reminded to always wear a helmet, ride on the right side of the road, and stop at all intersections. Organizers also noted that scooters are designed for one rider at a time.
