LAS VEGAS (FOX5) —A new exhibition exploring Black history in Southern Nevada is now open at the Las Vegas Civic Center Gallery.

“Rhythm and Resilience: Black Vegas” opens with the story of John Howell, identified as one of the first Black landowners in the area and a former part-owner of what is now known as the Springs Preserve.

What the exhibit covers

The exhibition walks visitors through the Railroad Era, the Westside Business District, the rise and fall of the Moulin Rouge, and the civil rights efforts that opened jobs on the Las Vegas Strip.

Curator Carmen Beals said the project is personal to her.

“This exhibition came to be because the city of Las Vegas asked me if I was interested in possibly producing or curating an exhibition,” Beals said. “And I totally said, yes, that is my passion.”

The exhibition runs through August 20, 2026.
