LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Metro Police say they’ve arrested a Las Vegas man for a stabbing that left his roommate dead.
Las Vegas Metro Police officers say on Sept. 6, another roommate called 911 just before four in the morning from an apartment complex near Eastern and Charleston. She reported that the man was injured, but still breathing. Police arrived to find Kyle Hughes suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Both officers and paramedics tried to revive Hughes, but police say he died at the scene.
A female roommate told officers her two male roommates got into an argument, and Hughes stabbed a man she called “Christian” first. They say she told them the fight continued with Christian stabbing the victim multiple times and then leaving the apartment.
Officers say they encountered a man who matched Christian’s description about a half hour after arriving at the murder scene. They say he lied about his identity, claiming his name was John Wayne. At that point, police detained the man for further questioning. A later search of his backpack revealed an ID with the name Christian Bryant.
Officers then detained Bryant for questioning.
Meanwhile, homicide detectives arrived to search the apartment for evidence. An arrest report shows they found two kitchen knives a short distance from the victim’s body; one with a four-inch blade, the other with an eight-inch blade. They also noted there were bleach stains on the victim’s clothing, as well as bleach poured on his body. They also noted finding two bottles of cleaning bleach in the apartment, as well as nine empty alcohol bottles in the apartment’s trash.
The arrest report also shows Bryant was initially uncooperative and often belligerent with police during questioning. They say he only became cooperative after learning he’d be charged with open murder with a deadly weapon. At that point, they say he told them he stabbed Hughes in self-defense.
Police say Bryant did have a single stab wound to his back, in addition to other injuries consistent with a fight, but none were serious. Hughes showed signs of at least five stab wounds, and police believe those wounds ended his life.
Investigators say at the time of his arrest, Bryant had two backpacks filled with clothing with him. And although he denied knowing Hughes had died, they believe he was preparing to escape. They also say they believe it took 17 minutes for the female roommate to call 911.
The investigation into this deadly incident continues.
