WINNCEMUCCA, Nev. (KOLO) – The Bureau of Land Management will be conducting a wild horse gather near Winnemucca.

BLM says it will begin the gather on or around Jan. 26 in and around the Snowstorm Mountain and Little Humboldt Herd Management areas located around 45 miles northeast of the city of Winnemucca in Humboldt and Elko County, Nevada.

The gather will take place in the area of the land consumed in the Jakes Fire.

The agency says they intend to gather around 182 excess wild horses using helicopters.

BLM says the appropriate management level for the area is between 90 and 140 wild horses in the Snowstorm area and between 40 and 80 wild horses for the Little Humboldt Area.

The most recent gather was conducted in 2021. The estimated population of wild horses in the Snowstorm Mountains and Little Humboldt areas is 272.

BLM says a survey of the area revealed limited availability of forage due to the fire and that the forage that remains is not enough to sustain the horses.

The horses will be taken to the Winnemucca Off Range Corrals in Paradise Valley where they will be readied for adoption or sale.
