FORT MOHAVE, AZ (AZFamily) — A young boy is in custody after allegedly bringing a gun to school and threatening a teacher in Fort Mohave on Monday, according to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office.
Just before noon, deputies responded to Fort Mohave Elementary School for reports of a student with a gun. Before the deputies arrived, teachers were able to disarm the student and remove him from the classroom.
Once deputies got to campus, they learned an 8-year-old boy brought a loaded handgun with him to school. Authorities say the student threatened one of the teachers while he was holding the gun and then passed it off to another student. It is unclear if the second student made any threats while in possession of the gun.
A student who was not involved overheard what was happening and reported it to the principal. That’s when staff stepped in, and the boy was removed from the classroom.
“MVESD takes any incident involving a weapon on campus extremely seriously. We are following all required safety and legal procedures. We are especially grateful for the student who spoke up. Their courage helped keep everyone safe and reminds us of the importance of ‘see something, say something,’” the school district posted on social media.
Based on the information deputies learned in an interview with the boy and his parent, the 8-year-old boy was arrested. He is facing multiple felony charges, including misconduct involving weapons, disorderly conduct, minor in possession of a firearm, interfering with an educational institution and threatening/intimidating.
Deputies did not say how the child got the gun. It is unclear if the second student who held the weapon will be facing any charges.
