LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada is celebrating its 60th year serving free Thanksgiving meals to over 750 homeless people Thursday.

Starting in the early morning, a team lead by Executive Chef Jun Lao created a giant meal comprised of:

  • 325 pounds of roasted turkey
  • 325 pounds of garlic mashed potatoes
  • 325 pounds of corn bread stuffing
  • 325 pounds of green bean casserole
  • 25 gallons of turkey gravy
  • 25 gallons of cranberry sauce
  • 65 gallons of hot cocoa
  • 750 slices of pumpkin pie

The meals were prepped on campus starting around 4:30 a.m. before being distributed by volunteers at the campus entrance around 10 a.m. Mayor Shelley Berkley and Attorney General Aaron Ford were among those volunteers.

“When my kids were little, and now they’re all in their 40s, but when my kids were little, I thought it was very important for them to come and feed the people that are homeless right now,“ Berkley said. ”I mean, we are very fortunate, so before we sit down, and have our Thanksgiving dinner, it’s very important to give something back to the community.”

She continued, “This one is very near and dear to my heart because this is the first time as mayor that I’m feeding the homeless here at Catholic Charities.”

FOX5 also spoke with one person who received a meal and says it was a “real support” on a day like today. “I came here 11 years ago from Florida and I didn’t know anyone. So this is a real support for me, you know, to have this with the meal and everything I have here. So I’m very grateful and thankful and I’m enjoying my meal.”
