LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Clark County School District is observing Safe Travels Day on Thursday, marking a new opportunity for road-safety reminders for students across the district.

Safe Travels Day is organized by CCSD Safe Routes to School, a program aimed at raising awareness and reinforcing safe behaviors on and off campus. As part of the day’s events, CCSD released four short videos covering safety tips for pedestrians, teen drivers, bike and scooter riders, and bus riders. All CCSD schools are encouraged to show the bike and scooter safety video during morning announcements Thursday.

Community Events

According to a release from CCSD, Safe Travels Day will have both students and faculty thinking about traffic safety. Emergency Management Coordinators will conduct arrival or departure audits at approximately 24 district campuses, designed to give administrators recommendations for improving safety on and around their campuses.

SRTS partners are also participating in Safe Travels Day by hosting safety events at various CCSD campuses, including helmet fittings, car seat checks, and safety programs.

CCSD Police Department officers will also conduct U-turn enforcement in the William E. Orr Middle School zone, to remind drivers that U-turns are against the law in an active school zone.

Additionally, the City of Henderson and AmeriCorps will distribute free helmets and bicycle lights to students at Jack and Terry Mannion Middle School at 2 p.m. Informational banners will also be displayed on campus to educate students on the differences between legal and illegal e-bikes.

New initiative coming Fall 2026

CCSD is also introducing a new Safe Travels safety initiative for interested high schools beginning in the 2026–2027 school year.

The program allows participating high school students to develop and carry out peer-led safety campaigns, tools, and strategies aimed at reducing student-related motor vehicle crashes. CCSD will collect information from interested schools, with student projects set to launch in September 2026.

Superintendent Jhone Ebert said the day is a call for collective responsibility.

“On CCSD Safe Travels Day, we want the community to recognize that it takes everyone working together to make roads safe for students and their families,” Ebert said. “CCSD Safe Routes to School has organized a tremendous community event, and we are thankful for the many partners who are helping to spread the message of traffic safety.”

Camila, a Las Vegas High School senior who appeared in the CCSD safety videos, spoke about the initiative on CCSD’s Destination District Podcast.

“As a student, this topic is important to me because we should feel safe walking, biking, and being driven to and from school,” Camila said. “Being part of these videos allowed me to help raise awareness and encourage people to be more careful around schools.”
