LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A cyber security attack on the Clark County School District is said to have contributed about $15 million dollars to its budget crisis.
Interim Superintendent explained why those expenses are here to stay.
Last October, we told you about a data breach that released sensitive information of CCSD teachers, students, and families.
Parents sued the school district. The lawsuit said CCSD failed to notify people that their information was stolen.
It also said the district should have prevented this, after another breach in 2020.
This week, state Senator Nicole Cannizzaro grilled CCSD interim Superintendent Brenda Larsen-Mitchell on this year’s budget crisis.
Larsen-Mitchell shared efforts to increase cyber security was part of the extra expenses.
“Unanticipated litigation, incurred an additional $15 million for cyber security on things that were unanticipated costs,” shared Larsen-Mitchell
When asked, “Why was it that you had $15 million in unanticipated expenses related to cyber security?”
“Roughly around last October – November we had an incident with a data breach we had to increase our cyber security so we made the investment in Fortinet of approximately $15 million dollars” the interim Superintendent said.
Larsen-Mitchell went on to say that the $15 million dollar cyber security investment will be an annual expense.
