LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A Clark County School District Police K9 was left inside a hot patrol vehicle for over six hours and would later die the same day.

FOX5 obtained an affidavit for James Harris. The 54-year-old faces two misdemeanor charges for failing to care for K9 Marley.

Marley died Nov. 14 last year. That day, Harris was assigned to Foothill High School because there was a lack of campus officers.

He arrived at 6:55 a.m. Cameras showed that Marley did not exit the vehicle nor follow Harris into the campus.

The officer admitted in a statement that he disconnected the heat sensor. CCSDPD says that it’s a safety mechanism that would roll down windows, turn on a fan for the kennel and set off an alarm to alert anyone nearby of the dangerous temperatures inside the vehicle.

The officer also said he did not check on Marley the entire day. The K9 was left inside the vehicle without any water or restroom breaks for about six and a half hours.

According to the affidavit, Harris moved his vehicle to a different spot on campus before calling in assistance for Marley.

CCSD Police would take Marley to an animal hospital where he died. The document says Marley likely died from heat-related issues.

Harris is expected in court on March 25 at 9 a.m.
