LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — As they do every year, the Clark County School District Police Department sent one of its officers out in brightly-colored costume to remind drivers to pay attention to pedestrians and the rules of the road.

“We’ve seen vehicles speeding, we’ve seen vehicles not yielding to the pedestrian that’s crossing in the crosswalk,” Lt. Michael Campbell told FOX5 Thursday morning at the intersection of Boulder Hwy. and Whitney, where a woman was hit and killed earlier this month. “If you see a vehicle slowing down or stopping on the roadway, you have to slow down and stop.”

Lt. Campbell came equipped with a radar gun, and helped fellow officers give out multiple citations for speeding.

“It’s Boulder Highway,” he said. “The lanes are wide, the speed is 45, and people are doing upwards of 65.”

This time of year, efforts ramp up to curb reckless driving, particularly to protect people in crosswalks.

“This starts the most dangerous season for pedestrians,” said Director for Ped Safe Vegas Erin Breen, who chose the location for Thursday’s crackdown.

The timing of this event also coincides with the night thousands of children across the valley will be filling up crosswalks and residential streets.

“Make sure that our kids are wearing bright clothing,” Officer Keith Habig with CCSDPD, who dressed as a giant squid to be visible to drivers, advised. “They’re a lot more seen when they’re out there in the streets, and it can definitely help keep them safer.”

This year, 53 pedestrians have been hit and killed by vehicles in LVMPD’s jurisdiction.
