LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A Clark County School District Police Officer faces animal mistreatment charges in the death of a K9.
CCSDPD said these charges stem from an investigation after K9 Marley died in November.
FOX5 Investigates looked into the charges and the possible punishment the officer faces.
Las Vegas Justice Court records show 54-year-old Officer James Harris faces two misdemeanor charges related to leaving Marley in a car. One of them is failure to provide proper air, food, shelter, or water to an impounded animal.
Nevada law says, if convicted, Officer Harris could spend up to six months in jail, required to do 120 hours of community service and pay a fine of up to $1,000.
Las Vegas Justice Court records also show Office Harris faces a charge of leaving an animal in a car during extreme heat or cold, and sites Nevada Statute 574.195.
FOX5 Investigates learned that law was repealed in 2017.
Sources told FOX5 it should be Nevada Statute 202.487, leaving a pet unattended in motor vehicle. That crime also comes with up to six months in jail and fines of up to $1,000.
FOX5 Investigates is working to learn more about what happened. Was this intentional or an accident? We’re also working to figure out why Officer Harris is not facing harsher felony charges since police dogs are considered officers.
Officer Harris is expected to appear in court on March. 25.
CCSDPD said he has been with the Clark County School District since January 2003. He is now assigned at home with pay.
