LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — As children develop their skills, parents may notice their kids are learning at a different pace than their peers.
It may be worry some, but there is a program within CCSD that helps them get on track. The Child Find Program within Clark County School District evaluates 4,000 students a year who are getting ready to take on preschool the following year.
FOX5 spoke to mom Bianca Rubio about her experience enrolling her 4-year-old son Adriel into the program.
“Around 18 months his pediatrician and I spoke about the red flags,” Rubio said.
Rubio said those red flags consisted of her son not wanting to eat certain food and was having a hard time starting to speak.
“We really paid attention to what I saw at home, that’s why we got a neuro psych evaluation,” Rubio said.
Rubio said those signs from the evaluation pointed towards Adriel having autism. Despite preparing herself about Adriel’s diagnosis, it was still hard on her.
“I was very emotional because all I wanted was for my son to have like a normal childhood. But that’s OK, he is amazing,” Rubio said.
Adriel’s pediatrician informed Rubio about the Child Find Program and as soon as Adriel turned three, she enrolled him. He was able to get personal attention from those within the program and help prepare for preschool with his peers.
“He started saying his numbers and letters in alphabetical order and it was incredible how his mind was absorbing all the education,” Rubio said.
However, a child does not need an official intellectual disability or developmental delay diagnosis to take part in the program, according to Delilah Krasch, the early childhood director.
“There are a variety of pre-k programs that they can attend. We have programs that we will have them attend with other peers. We can provide speech and language services, physical and occupational therapy in order to ensure they are receiving those early intervention services,” Krasch said.
Krasch said sometimes they will re-evaluate students in kindergarten and find that they no longer need the services.
