LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The results are in for a survey conducted to gauge support for pushing the Clark County School District’s start time back 30 minutes.
CCSD conducted a three-week-long survey that acquired a total of 48,038 responses, according to a presentation on the results. The data cited, 65% of elementary school students, 75% of middle school students, and 68% of high school students supported the proposal.
Potential issues with the proposal were listed as challenges in the presentation, such as conflicts with parent schedules, additional expenses related to childcare, and changes in family time in the late afternoon and evening.
Research cited in the presentation indicated that a change in school start time could have a positive impact on students’ sleep, mental health, alertness, and academic performance.
The presentation listed several options for start times, including a proposed change for the 2026 – 2027 school year, which would shift the current 3-tier bell schedule by 30 minutes. The example given in the presentation would see high schoolers start classes at 7:30 a.m., middle schoolers begin at 8:30 a.m., and elementary schoolers at 9:30 a.m.
That option would not impact the transportation budget and staffing needs, the presentation stated.
