LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A teacher at Steve Schorr Elementary in southwest Las Vegas says her school’s funding is suffering – after the Clark County School District discovered a district-wide budget deficit.
“Our school was told that we had to cut around $225,000, and that’s just for one school,” said Charlotte Brigham, a special education teacher at Schorr Elementary. “CCSD has over 365 schools, and so we’re talking about millions of dollars. So it’s alarming.”

Brigham says at a meeting last week, Schorr Elementary staff received this handout, detailing the breakdown of the budget cuts at their school. It shows the school’s plan to cut a PE assistant, reduce hours for a kindergarten teaching assistant and take $35,000 dollars away from extra duty pay for tutoring.
“In the past, we offered tutoring after school for students in need and paid teachers to do additional training, so we’ve had to greatly reduce those funds,” said Brigham.
The budget plan also includes eliminating a $1,000 stipend meant to help retain teachers through the end of the school year.
“It was like an incentive if you worked the entire school year through the last day of the school year did you get $1000 stipend, and so that’s been cut for the entire staff.”
Unsure of what’s next, Brigham says some teachers are now bracing for the possibility of more cuts on the way.
“A lot of teachers are concerned about not getting their 8% raise just because some of the staff has received it, and then the other portion of the licensed teachers are supposed to receive it in October,” she said.
FOX5 has reached out to the district several times, asking them to confirm which schools are eliminating positions or cutting hours or programs due to budget cuts, but we have not gotten those answers.
The CCSD trustee meeting scheduled for this week was canceled. They’ll meet next on October 10.
The state superintendent has also asked CCSD’s interim superintendent to answer a list of questions related to the budget – with a deadline of October 3.
