Central Las Vegas Valley businesses share impact from recent shootings

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A shopping center on the corner of University and Twain has seen two shootings in a span of over two weeks. Businesses in the center have mixed answers to how the recent violence is impacting them.

From liquor stores, sandwich shops, and even an adult daycare, the Twain Swenson Plaza has it all.

On April 29, Metro Police responded to a shooting in the center that diverted a planned peace walk in the area.

Then on May 15, Metro Police responded to another shooting in the center that reportedly happened just before 11 a.m..

An employee at a liquor store in the center said Metro Police put up a crime tower after the shooting in April.

He said they have also seen increased police patrol since April’s shooting, which has actually slowed business, because less people are hanging out in front of the shop. Although, he said he doesn’t mind because it’s for a good reason.

An employee at another business in the center, Palm Pizza, said their business is slow for a different reason. He said he thinks people are avoiding the area because of the recent violence.

Christina Tiechenor, a mother who lives nearby, said she’s recently had to keep her head on a swivel when visiting the center.

“I’ve seen people get beat up in this parking lot. I’ve seen people get robbed in the parking lot. I’ve seen people get beat up coming out of the Luckies,” she said. “We don’t even want to come out with our kids. A lot of us don’t want our kids out here.”

The shopping center is in Metro’s South Central Area Command. According to recent crime stats, the area command has seen a 25% increase in homicide reports compared to last year. Other crimes in the area command, including assault, kidnapping and other sex offenses are down.
