LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A centuries old tradition is riding strong in Las Vegas, as the community prepares to host a cabalgata this Sunday.
Known as a horseback procession, the cabalgata dates to medieval Spain and has since evolved to a vibrant celebration of culture and community.
The event, called Navidad con Colibries, started as a small gathering of friends led by organizer Yudit Pinedo, who wanted to honor her roots and share her culture. Now, it has grown into a large-scale celebration featuring live performances, traditional foods and dancing horses.
The Cabalgata will feature displays like escaramuzas, a Mexican equestrian sport in which a team of women perform a series of moves on horseback.
It’s inspired by female soldiers in the Mexican revolution who would ride with the men and perform their intricate skills on a horse.
“This is to honor our traditions and our Mexican families, said Piendo in Spanish. “And so that little girls and participants feel proud of their Mexican heritage and proud to speak Spanish too.”
In addition to the parade the event will feature a toy giveaway, live mariachi music, and traditional dishes like tamales and pozole.
The Navidad con Colibries Cabalgata will take place at Bradley Bridle Park on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 11 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.
