LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Nevada residents who carefully monitor when they use energy-hungry appliances may need to adjust their habits as NV Energy prepares to implement a new personalized billing system.
The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada approved NV Energy’s request Tuesday to charge customers based on when individual households use the most power. Currently, all customers pay the same rate for electricity all day long.
However, NV Energy will shift that. In April, customers can expect to pay the most during times they personally use the most power.
NV Energy says the personalized approach will result in lower power bills because customers can monitor their individual usage and reduce consumption later in the week to save money.
“Say it’s 5 in the morning, and that’s when you’re running your dishwasher, when you’re doing the laundry, you’re getting ready, you’ve got everything blasting, that might be the hour of the day that you put the most demand on the system,” said Meghin Delaney, media relations manager for NV Energy. “And so that’ll be calculated into a charge that’ll appear on your bill.”
Delaney said the demand charge is designed to be revenue-neutral and won’t increase overall bills.
Consumer advocates worry the new system will be difficult for customers to navigate.
“How do I figure that out, right? How do I work nine to five, go to my job, and then only vacuum … at this time, but I have to turn the AC up, that gives a little bit of trouble to the average Nevada family and small business,” said Camalot Todd, communications director for the Nevada Conservation League.
NV Energy plans to launch an education campaign to help customers understand money-saving strategies under the new peak power policy.
