LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A video is making its rounds on social media showing a large group of kids on e-bikes zipping through the streets of Summerlin Friday.
Since its spring break, viewers tell FOX5 they’ve seen even more kids out and about dangerously weaving through traffic.
FOX5 heard from a parent who says the kids wouldn’t be on their e-bikes in the streets if they could simply stay in the parks.
Michele Morris’s main point is that these kids are being chased out of places like Fox Hill Park in Summerlin, often times by angry adults, and there isn’t a solution.
But Morris is working on one. She just needs county commissioners to listen.
“Chasing kids out of parks and into gaming chairs isn’t the answer for me,” Morris said.
Morris’s two sons ride around on their e-dirt bikes supervised. But even when she’s around, she’s not the only adult who has a say in what her children are doing.
“I have seen adults as I’m witnessing my kids, they’ll come up to them and just scream in their faces, ‘you shouldn’t be here, get out of the parks!’ And these kids are looking at them like a deer in a headlight because they’re just existing,” Morris said.
Morris thinks the young drivers are getting a bad rap because of scenes like this on social media, showing riders running red lights, and racing through the streets. She doesn’t like seeing it, either!
“The driving in the streets is a huge issue. They’re reckless, it’s scary for me as a parent. It’s scary as a driver. I don’t want to see it,” Morris said.
Clark County Commissioner, Justin Jones knows the problem isn’t limited to the streets.
“A lot of times they’ll be in our parks and frighten people who are in the park trying to enjoy time with their families and it’s just been a real issue,” Jones said.
Jones adds the real issue, is the gray area of where these e-rides belong, and how they’re classified.
That’s why he’s behind the creation of an ordinance to spell out restrictions and citations for dangerous behavior on these e-rides.
Jones tells FOX5 what the ordinance could say about the electric rides in parks.
“We’re definitely looking at all the options, particularly in our parks of either banning the e-motorcycles altogether or regulating their speed,” Jones said.
Morris hopes commissioner Jones pumps the brakes on that idea and instead considers these options she laid out in an email to him.
“I would love to see a park built for these kids,” Morris said. “I would love it if we could maybe set aside some hours for these kids to come to the park.”
Morris tells FOX5 she hasn’t received a response from the commissioner yet, but she’s hopeful her ideas will be taken into consideration.
Commissioner Jones tells FOX5 the county could introduce an ordinance in less than 30 days.
