LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Thunderstorms are back in the forecast, and the City of Henderson is taking steps to prepare.

Crews are working to make sure roads don’t flood by clearing out storm drains using “vactor trucks.”

These trucks use vacuum pressure to suck up rocks and other debris from the drains. This way, water can flow through, and doesn’t back up into roads or neighborhoods.

“If we don’t clean the system, then the water doesn’t enter the system, and it can flow into someone’s house or into the street,” City of Henderson Project Engineer Chelsie Kekaula Duke says.

Kekaula Duke says they clean drains routinely, but especially drains along busy streets when a storm is in the forecast.

City officials say sometimes, it’s not only rocks and debris that get sucked into the trucks.

“Usually out in this area we’ll find snakes, scorpions, spiders and money,” City of Henderson Public Works Supervisor Ed Costolow says. “We’ve found some discarded guns, we’ll find knives a lot.”
