LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson discussed the death of a 12-year-old boy who was struck by a vehicle in a suspected DUI crash.
Cristofer Suarez died Monday. The crash happened Friday just before 8 a.m. near the intersection of Eastern and Owens avenues. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said Suarez had just taken a step off a curb when the driver of a white SUV hit him.
The suspect, 27-year-old Oh’Ryan Brooks, reportedly did not stop at the scene. According to an arrest report, he was tracked and located through his license plate number.

“People are driving in a reckless manner,” Wolfson said. “They’re either speeding, or impaired, or both. And they’re not taking into consideration the consequences of their actions. This is not an accident. This is a collision.”
When police found Brooks, officers say he failed a sobriety test. He admitted to his involvement in the crash and that he smoked marijuana before getting his children ready for school around 6 a.m. to 7 a.m., according to an arrest report.
“There’s no indication of alcohol in this case, but there is an indication that he inhaled marijuana before driving some of his own kids or the kids of somebody he was taking care of,” Wolfson said. “So he may have been driving with children he was taking care of in addition to this collision that killed this 12-year-old boy. People need to think. People need to care.”
According to the arrest report, he told officers he smoked more marijuana after the crash, ”because he knew he was going to jail.” Brooks said the sun was in his eyes, and he did not know what he hit. Police said Suarez was thrown more than 400 feet.
Cristofer’s mother, Martina Suarez, said the boy had been on life support.
“I see it as homicide,” Suarez said. “He killed my son, and I want everybody to know.”
Brooks’s bail was set to $250,000. Wolfson noted that a person is entitled to bail unless it’s a capital case, which is first-degree murder.
“I’ve said in many interviews over the last five or ten years that I’ve been the DA, is ‘we’re not doing enough.’ Whatever we’re doing right now is not working.”
Brooks is expected to return to court on Oct. 21.
