LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Las Vegas man is accused of impersonating an attorney and using a real lawyer’s bar number to appear in court, Metro Police said.
According to the arrest report, Jerrell Luis Berrios, an attorney, notified police that he had been told another man used his bar number in a separate case. Berrios told police the man was using the bar number to impersonate him.
A detective reviewed video and transcripts of the court proceedings, noting that documents were signed “Jerrell B.” and used Berrios’ bar number, according to police documents.
Investigators said a man identified as Jerrell D. Roberts misrepresented himself as Berrios on three separate occasions, the report said. He reportedly used false names and business names, including “Jerrell D. Roberts, Esq., Attorney and Financial Consultant,” “Roberts & Legacy Wealth Advisors,” and “Roberts & Legacy LLP.”
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers detained Roberts, the report said. He admitted to police that he did not attend law school, but instead was a “special administrator.” He told investigators he “made up” the bar number, saying he had heard that bar numbers ranging from the mid-to-low hundreds up to 1,000 and 15,000 must not return to anyone.
Roberts told police he wanted to represent himself and his mother, Rosiland Richard, in probate court. After receiving no response, he said he was discouraged and believed the process would be expedited if he began representing himself as an attorney.
Roberts faces eight felony charges, including three counts of practicing law without a license, using another’s identity to harm or for unlawful means, burglary of a structure, personating another person, and two counts of perjury.
FOX5 learned Roberts is on unpaid leave with Clark County after Las Vegas Police learned he is an employee of juvenile court services.
