LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Clark County is hoping a new solution near the intersection of Lamb Blvd. and Hacienda Ave. will stop illegal street racing in the area.
Thursday morning, Clark County Public Works Crews cut out sections of asphalt in the intersection to make drifting and donuts harder for drivers, and added a speed cushion in each direction on Lamb, North of Hacienda.
This comes after neighbors brought the issue of reckless driving to Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson’s attention.
Steven Vadan says he’s lived in the neighborhood for four years and has dealt with street racing for the bulk of the time.
“It’s literally every single day, all hours of the day and night,” Vadan said.
The neighborhood has the scars to prove it.
“This wall discoloration is where someone had lost control and went through my neighbors wall. If you look around, there are other holes or discolored walls where the same occurrence happened,” Vadan explained.
FOX5 has covered issues in the area before. One neighbor even told FOX5 a street racer shot at his home and wall.
Vadan says he’s “over the moon” to see real change in the area only about a month after he took the problem to a Town Advisory Board.
“I have a three year old daughter, and I worry about her safety. I would hate for one of these donut spinners to go through my wall,” he shared.
Gibson says only time will tell if the speed cushions and milling work will stop racers in their tracks, but he’s hopeful it will at least slow them down.
“We’re told the speed racers will not want to do damage to their tires or to their cars, these are things that get in the way of high speeds,” Gibson said.
He says if it does work, it’s a solution that could be used in other problematic areas in the valley.
Their next steps are to monitor the area and collect data on whether or not the changes are working. Gibson says that data will be available to the public.
