LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Maryland Parkway and Flamingo Road is a busy intersection for drivers and pedestrians.

“What I see is people who are selfish and rude and have no empathy for people. They just run a light, hey, you know,” said James Brown.

James Brown walks the intersection all the time and is frustrated by the driving he sees.

“Last week we surveyed this corner, which is Maryland Parkway and Flamingo, for just an hour and a half during morning traffic and saw 82 people run red lights here,” said Jeanne Marsala Director of Clark County Safe Kids and Sunrise Trauma Center.

Marsala says 10 volunteers were at four corners of the intersection. She says the group did not count anyone who was in the intersection while the light was yellow and then turned to red.

“This area is important because we have four elementary schools, a middle school, a high school and even a university in the area,” said CCSD Sgt. Bernardo Abarca. “So you can imagine the chaos that can ensure when you have parents and children and university students as well.”

Sgt. Abarca says 80 red light runners in an hour and a half could be a week’s worth of violations in another area. It is why CCSD Police, UNLV Police and Safe Kids returned to the intersection on Wednesday to raise awareness.

Marsala says 1,149 people died in red light crashes around the county in 2022 with 107,000 injuries.

“School has started. It’s critical for kids to be safe and for drivers to be safe here. We’re just out here trying to save a life,” said Marsala.

Police and the group want drivers to get off phones, pay attention, slow down, stop on red lights and give themselves extra time when leaving home to get to work or school.
