NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – After a week of fear and uncertainty surrounding immigration enforcement, Nevada leaders gathered to send a different message – one of unity.

On Tuesday, city and federal leaders showed up, not with warnings, but with support – sending a clear message that this community belongs.

The Dolores Huerta Resource Center opened its doors on Tuesday in North Las Vegas. The mood was noticeably different from just days ago. Where there was panic, there is now purpose.

For leaders here, the space represents something deeper – a stand for diversity.

“There’s a lot of controversy about immigration right now. There’s a lot of criticism of DEI, we believe, just the opposite, that diversity is our strength, and this center helps to show that, said Congresswoman Dina Titus.

It’s a message echoed by other leaders who said that at this moment inclusion matters more than ever.

“Diversity…for some reason has been turned into a nasty word, it doesn’t need to be,” said Councilman Isaac Barron. “Again, this center is just a simple reflection of something like that.”

Offering free healthcare, legal workshops, ESL classes and mental health support, the center is a one stop community hub. Leaders say this center will create a space that honors where people come from and what they contribute.

“A lot of times people aren’t aware of all of the resources that are actually available, especially within the Latino community, which is the fastest growing part of southern Nevada,” said Congressman Steven Horsford.

In a week filled with fear, leaders say this grand opening served as a reminder – the community isn’t alone.

“This is a good news day. We’ll go back to DC and keep up the fight on all the other fronts, but today’s a day that we get to celebrate,” Congressman Horsford said.
