LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Parents have gathered at the scene of a fatal hit-and-run collision that killed a 12-year-old boy on Friday, calling on city and school district officials to take action after the tragic crash.
In a Monday release, the group called the crash “part of a pattern of dangerous traffic incidents in the area surrounding J.D. Smith Middle School.” According to the release, parents have reported near-misses, speeding vehicles, and unsafe crossings in recent months.
Suggested actions include the installation of a traffic light in the area, increasing crossing guard presence, improving lighting and signage, and enforcing speed limits during school hours.
Christofer Suarez, 12, died Monday, days after the Friday collision. His mother, Martina Suarez, said the boy had been on life support. The crash happened just after 7:30 a.m. on Friday near the intersection of Eastern and Owens avenues.
According to a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrest report, the suspect, Oh’Ryan Brooks, 27, admitted to his involvement in the crash, telling police that he smoked marijuana before the collision, and smoked more after ”because he knew he was going to jail.”
Before Cristofer’s death, Brooks faced one count of failing to stop at the scene of a crash, DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm, and reckless driving — all felonies. He is due in court at 8 a.m.
