LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A bill to increase punishments for a common problem in the Las Vegas Valley is headed to Governor Joe Lombardo’s deks.

AB503 passed the senate unanimously which would crack down on copper wire thefts. If signed by the Governor the bill would make it a crime to possess municipal grade or seven strand copper wire.

Those caught with less than 500 dollars worth face a misdemeanor. Anything more, it becomes a felony with a possibility of up to four years in prison.

If the theft impacts businesses or cause an outage, that would also be felony with a maximum of five years in prison.

The new punishments would go into effect October 1, if signed into law.
