LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — More than 80 deaths have been linked to heat-related illnesses so far in 2025, according to new numbers from the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
The total number sits at 87 as of Tuesday, though 8 cases are waiting for next-of-kin notification before victims are identified. The coroner identified the cause of death for a majority of cases as either cardiovascular disease or drug use.
The first heat-related death reported was identified as an 86-year-old man who died on May 9 of cardiac arrhythmia. The most recent death was a 69-year-old woman who died on August 2 of hypertensive cardiovascular disease.
The coroner also emphasized that certain drug classifications make people more susceptible to the heat, especially fentanyl. Other contributing factors in most deaths also include physical exertion, inappropriate clothing, lack of acclimatization, and poor fluid intake.
Last year, the coroner reported around 491 deaths.
