LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Overall crime in Las Vegas Metro Police’s jurisdiction dropped 10.6% year-to-date, with decreases in homicides, car thefts and destruction or vandalism of property among several other crimes.
However, human trafficking crimes jumped just over 19%, according to Metro Police’s crime figures. Sheriff Kevin McMahill addressed the rise in human trafficking crime during a recent interview with FOX5’s Tom Durian.
Recent trafficking investigation yields arrests
McMahill mentioned a recent two-year investigation that resulted in four arrests. Police said they found some businesses that operated as massage parlors but conducted illegal activity, including soliciting sex acts from customers.
“Unfortunately, I just found out that those individuals already made bail on that human trafficking case,” McMahill said. “So, I think we have to have some real conversation in our community about what punishments are for the crimes. These are multiyear cases that you’re putting together that they get a simple hearing, and the people are released from jail almost immediately.”
The sheriff said people forget about the human factor in these cases, noting these are people who are sold into “modern day slavery.” Sheriff McMahill said he wants to focus more on human trafficking and has hired a human trafficking advocate.
