LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A crossing guard is recovering after he was struck in a hit-and-run collision Wednesday, officials said.
The crossing guard, who was identified as a 36-year-old man, had walked into the intersection near Kell Lane and Lamb Boulevard in east Las Vegas to secure it and was struck by a vehicle making a right-hand turn, officials from All City Management Services (ACMS) said.
Officials said the crossing guard ended up on the hood of a car during the incident. He suffered a left knee injury, but Sergio Mayoral, team manager for ACMS, said he was out of the hospital Wednesday afternoon.
“Considering the impact and everything that happened, he’s doing well,” Mayoral said.
The driver fled the scene, Mayoral said, adding that they were able to obtain a license plate number and dash cam video. Those elements were provided to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department investigators.
“When I picked the guard up from the hospital, the first thing he said was, ‘I’m glad it was me and not the kids,’” Mayoral said. “That speaks volumes to what we do every single day.”
Mayoral advised drivers to slow down and pay attention to their surroundings, adding he doesn’t believe more signage is the answer.
“All the signs in the world, all the markings that we place make no difference to the driver who’s distracted,” he said. “They have to be conscious of what they do every single day. I mean, they’re driving like a 4,000-ton vehicle, and they’re just not paying attention.”
