LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — After announcing that it was unable to offer COVID-19 vaccines in Nevada last week, CVS confirmed it was still waiting for CDC approval Tuesday.
The FDA approved a new COVID-19 vaccine last Wednesday, but limited its use for many Americans. These guidelines would require those seeking a vaccine to get a prescription, unless they are a senior or have at least one high-risk condition.
On Friday, CVS and Walgreens told FOX5 that they were unable to distribute these new vaccines in three states: Massachusetts, New Mexico, and Nevada. A CVS spokesperson clarified that Nevada pharmacy laws prevented them from distributing vaccines in the state without approval from the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.
As a workaround, they shared that vaccines will be available “as early as tomorrow” in MinuteClinic locations around the valley, since pharmacy laws do not apply to retail medical clinics. In addition, the Southern Nevada Health District has also reaffirmed its commitment to distributing vaccines around the valley through its clinics.
“COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective, and the best way to protect against severe illness, hospitalization, and death. We strongly encourage those who are eligible to get and stay up to date with recommended vaccines,” SNHD shared in a statement.
