LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Frequent flyers beware, May 7 is the deadline for a Real ID.
Cybercriminals are taking advantage of that approaching deadline.
Real IDs are enhanced driver’s licenses or ID cards that will be required to board domestic flights.
They include personal information encoded into a scannable zone. They promise to make security screenings much faster.
Las Vegas Valley DMVs can upgrade IDs, just like renewing a driver’s license.
Scammers hope to capitalize on people’s reluctance to make that trip in person. They’ll call, text or email an offer for expedited service. Often, they look like they come from the DMV, or from the Department of Homeland Security.
Usually, they ask victims to click a link, and that’s when they steal personal information or download malware onto the victim’s computer.
For more information on a Real ID, visit the DMV’s website.
