LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Criminals even target those tasked with busting them! The FBI is now warning colleagues, government workers, and senior supervisors that malicious actors are using artificial intelligence-generated voice memos to impersonate senior U.S. officials.

These “vishing” messages specifically target current and former government workers. Agents say the sender starts by building a rapport and gaining trust. Eventually, they’ll try to access personal and business accounts via malicious links. They may even use your information to assume your identity and target your coworkers and colleagues.

The FBI’s not saying which officials’ voices criminals are using to conduct this scam, but agents do say they’re targeting those in both state and federal government.

In this case, as with most others, verification is your best protection. Know who you’re talking, testing, or emailing with by confirming phone numbers and email addresses.
