RENO, Nev. (KOLO) –8 P.M. UPDATE: Fourteen structures have been damaged by the Davis Fire and additional assessment will be done when it is safe to do, the U.S. Forest Service said Sunday night.
The 6,500-acre fire is burning in heavy timber and brush. Gusty winds are expected for the rest of the week. There is zero containment.
The southern end of the western side of the fire grew the most in Sunday’s winds, moving along the Mount Ros Highway. Crews mostly held the other fronts of the fire.
Most highways have reopened, although U.S. 395 is closed in Washoe Valley.
About 12,000 to 14,000 people are under evacuation orders in south Reno. The number of customers without power in Washoe County on Sunday night was 4,453. At its peak, about 17,000 customers were without power. NV Energy expects thousands of customers will remain without power through Monday morning for safety reasons.
7 P.M. UPDATE: Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue estimates the Davis Fire is 6,500 acres and said there is no containment.
4 P.M. UPDATE: Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency Sunday afternoon for the Davis Fire.
The governor’s announcement said the Davis Fire has burned about 5,000 acres and displaced 20,000 people from homes and businesses. It follows a state of emergency declaration by Washoe County.
It means evacuation requests by public safety are no longer voluntary.
“As the Davis Fire continues to threaten neighborhoods and critical infrastructure in Washoe County, I have declared a State of Emergency,” Lombardo said in the statement. “I implore all residents to follow the directions of local authorities assisting in the evacuations. Our firefighters and emergency management teams are fully engaged and working tirelessly to mitigate this threat and prevent further losses.”
1:50 P.M. UPDATE: The Davis Fire remains zero percent contained as of early Sunday afternoon, the U.S. Forest Service reported.
It is 3,300 acres. There are about 450 personnel assigned to the fire, including 12 fire crews and 45 fire engines. There are five helicopters dropping water.
There is no update on the number of structures burned. There is no cause listed for the fire.
NV Energy reported 9,363 customers without power as wind picked up and the evacuation zone was expanded to include Arrowcreek.
The Mount Rose Highway shutdown has been extended past the Mount Rose Ski Tahoe resort to the summit of Mount Rose.
The evacuation shelter at the Washoe County Senior Center at 1155 E 9th St. remains open. Large animals can be taken to the University of Nevada, Reno Equestrian Center or Fuji Park in Carson City.
NOON UPDATE: Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue said evacuations have been reinstated for the Arrowcreek area as winds stir up the Davis Fire.
10:40 A.M. UPDATE: Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue estimates the Davis Fire is 3,300 acres.
10 A.M. UPDATE: The Nevada Department of Transportation reports Interstate 580 is now open between Reno and Carson City.
U.S. 395 Alternate is open in Pleasant Valley but remains closed in Washoe Valley.
The Mount Rose Highway remains closed from South Virginia Street to the Mount Rose Ski Tahoe resort.
SEPT. 8 9:45 A.M. UPDATE: The Davis Fire remains active and evacuations remain in effect, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue reported Sunday morning.
The Mount Rose Highway was closed overnight from South Virginia Street to the Mount Rose- Ski Tahoe resort. Old U.S. 395 was opened to give people access to Eastlake Boulevard.
Residents who live north of the Mount Rose Highway were allowed to return home. Evacuation orders remain for St. James Village, the Galena area and areas south of the Mount Rose Highway,.
The number of NV Energy customers who had their electricity turned off for safety reasons dropped to 6,725. There is no estimate when power will be restored.
TMFR reports no fire containment. There is no update on the number of structures burned, which is up to 12. The latest fire size estimate is 1,800 acres.
High winds mean a Red Flag Warning for increased fire danger for the area from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. TMFR expects flare-ups as the wind increases.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is patrolling evacuated areas. People who did not evacuate should remain in place.
The Washoe County Senior Citizens Center at Ninth and Sutro streets remains open as an evacuation center.
People are asked to stay away from the fire area.
9:30 P.M. UPDATE: Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue reports up to 12 structures burned in the Davis Fire. It’s not clear how many are homes and how many are outbuildings.
The fire is now reported to be 1,800 acres.
NV Energy has doubled the number of customers without power as it de-energized lines for safety reasons. There are 18,698 customers without power and the number could increase if the fire continues to spread.
The Storey County Sheriff’s Office said the Virginia City Highlands will remain on alert for possible evacuations at least overnight.
The Washoe County Senior Citizen Center at 1155 E. 9th St. will remain open overnight as an evacuation center.
Interstate 580 remains closed from Damonte Ranch Parkway in south Reno to North Carson City.
People are asked to avoid the fire area.
Washoe County reported Davis Creek Regional Park had several buildings burn after the fire broke out around 2:30 p.m.
A home in the park burned. The family safely made it out but the possessions are lost and some pets are not accounted for.
The air quality is in the unhealthy range.
Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest are in unified command in the management of the fire.
7:50 P.M. UPDATE: Southbound Interstate 580 is closed at Damonte Ranch Parkway due to the Davis Fire.
Northern Nevada Public Health said there is unhealthy air quality in areas near the Davis Fire.
7 P.M. UPDATE: Interstate 580 is now closed from the Mount Rose Highway to College Parkway in Carson City because of the Davis Fire.
U.S. 395 Alternate is also closed in Washoe Valley.
The U.S. National Weather Service said a Red Flag Warning is in effect for the Sierra front until 8 p.m. due to winds reaching 40 mph and dry conditions.
6:10 P.M. UPDATE: At least six structures have been lost in the Davis Fire, Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue reported.
The fire is now estimated to be at least 1,500 acres.
More than 30 engines and trucks are on the fire and more are coming, TMFR said.
Air tankers are also dropping retardant on the fire.

5:35 P.M. UPDATE: Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue spokesman Adam Mayberry confirmed at least one structure has been lost to the Davis Fire.
Mayberry could not say if it was a home or outbuilding or how many structures were lost.
4:55 P.M. UPDATE: Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue said evacuations have been ordered for St. James Village, Galena Forest Estates, Montreaux, Arrowcreek and Washoe City.
The new evacuation site is now the Senior Center at Ninth Street and Sutro Street in Reno.
The fire is 500 acres and growing, TMFR reported. It urged people to respect evacuation requests before the fire is dangerous and moving rapidly.
3:55 P.M. UPDATE: The Storey County Sheriff’s Office has issued an evacuation warning for people in the Virginia Highlands area due to the fire near the Davis Creek Regional Park.
3:25 P.M. UPDATE: Washoe County Emergency Management said people near the wild fire at Davis Creek Regional Park need to evacuate.
People can evacuate to the South Valleys Library at 15650A Wedge Parkway.
3:10 P.M. UPDATE: Interstate 580 closed in both directions from Bellevue in Washoe Valley to and the Mount Rose Highway due to a brush fire around Davis Creek Regional Park, the Nevada Department of Transportation reports.
ORIGINAL STORY: Several fire agencies are responding to the Davis Creek Regional Park area for a brush fire that is about 3 acres, Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue reported Saturday afternoon.
TMFR asked people to avoid the area.
Scanner traffic indicates they are closing the road from U.S. 395 to the Bowers Mansion and Davis Creek Park area.
