LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The sheriff of Nye County said a dead person was found inside an encampment 15 feet below surface level Wednesday morning.
Video from KPVM shows Sheriff Joe McGill of the Nye County Sheriff’s Office talking about the discovery. He says a person approached officers training with K9 units at Petrick Park. They said they found a dead body inside a cave-like encampment while walking.
When deputies arrived, McGill said there was a home dug underground with two entrances. He said it was 15 feet below grade level.
“We are exercising all precautions to keep our deputies safe,” he said. “So that they can go inside and recover the body.”
McGill said the home will be disposed of after the body has been recovered. There is also no identification of the deceased. He says an ID will come after an autopsy, which he expects will take several weeks.
The Nye County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately say if they are seeking a suspect in this case or if foul play was involved.
