LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The dog abandoned at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas has received thousands of applications for adoption from all over the world, according to a local rescue group.
The dog, named “JetBlue” by the rescue, gained attention on social media after the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department shared a now-viral post, highlighting the arrest of his previous owner for the abandonment.
Now, Retriever Rescue of Southern Nevada says JetBlue has received over 2,400 adoption applications. They add that while applications in Nevada had to be capped at 400, they received thousands more from London, the Virgin Islands, Florida, and the East Coast.
“After many thoughtful discussions about JetBlue’s specific needs, the life he deserves, and what would be best for him long-term, one truth kept rising to the top: from the very first moment he met him, there was someone who loved this dog fiercely,” the rescue organization said in a statement.
Following the dog’s abandonment, the rescue says one of the police officers who responded to the scene followed up with the group to to make sure JetBlue was safe and ask how he could help. His wife then continued to follow up with the rescue daily during JetBlue’s 10-day hold period.
The rescue added that the officer’s family had a pre-approved application with the rescue and had already completed a home check. They say they were waiting for the right match that is dog and kid friendly.
Retriever Rescue says JetBlue will be reunited with his hero and officially joining his family at an adoption event on Saturday.
While JetBlue’s story went viral, Retriever Rescue says they currently have 40 other dogs in their care who are equally deserving and waiting for their own families. They add that as support pours in for JetBlue, these dogs are also seeing an increase in support.
“There is only one JetBlue. But there are so many others still in need,” the rescue said.
The organization said also needs donations to help rescue more dogs like JetBlue.
Saturday’s adoption event will take place at Dawg House LV on West Sahara.
