LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A dog was tied to a pole outside of a Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals facility Friday, and the incident was caught on camera.
According to a release from the Nevada SPCA, the animal had been tied to a pole outside its facility when staffers arrived at 9 a.m. on Friday. Officials described the dog as “fearful and distressed.”
To relieve the dog from the hot Las Vegas weather, staffers were able to redirect cooling misters and to carefully deliver water to the animal. However, the release noted that it would have been unsafe for anyone to approach the highly fearful dog directly.
Clark County Animal Protective Services was able to safely retrieve the dog, although SPCA officials noted that the “visibly stressed” dog remained tethered to the pole for nearly an hour.
“Security footage from Nevada SPCA captured the vehicle and license plate of the individuals suspected of abandoning the dog,” officials said in the news release. “This footage has been turned over to Clark County Animal Protective Services, who have opened an investigation.”
“This is a heartbreaking reminder of why education and accessible resources for pet owners are so important,” said Lori Heeren, executive director of the Nevada SPCA. “No animal deserves to be left behind, especially in such unsafe conditions. We’re grateful for the quick action of our team and our partners at Animal Protective Services.”
SPCA officials noted that abandoning any animal in extreme weather is dangerous and illegal, adding that “there is always a better option than abandonment.” The release advised anyone unable to care for their animal to contact local shelters, rescues, or animal control agencies for assistance.
