LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Fox5’s John Huck is in Los Angeles County this week – covering both the Eaton and Palisades wildfires.
John has brought us the devastation first-hand talking to those who survived the fires but lost everything. But among the grief there’s also hope and help.
The relief is coming – thanks to the generosity of people here in the Las Vegas Valley.
Three big box trucks pulled up to the YMCA in Koreatown, and they are loaded with supplies donated by Southern Nevadans. It is a huge display.
There is water, of course, which is so badly needed here for the victims of the wildfires. Towels, kitchen supplies, food, the list goes on and on and on. This is organized by Congregation Ner Tamid, and we’ve been broadcasting it for the last week, and Nevadans certainly turned out.
They’re amazed by the number of supplies some 75,000 lbs. They figure worth about $100,000. They’re going to load it into a garage and then get those supplies out just as quickly as possible.
FOX5 talked to one of the drivers, and by the way, the drivers are all veterans, and we talked to one of them why this mission was important.
Ryan Werner, a Veteran/Volunteer Driver said, “I was stationed not too far from here. Years ago. So, you know, kind of feel a little bit of part of the happenings of what’s going on. And we know that ton of veterans in California. Yeah. Plus, just they just need help. So, we were here, and we know how it felt in October. Yeah. You know during the October shooting. So it’s a chance to pay back and and try to make a difference like everyone else for us so.”
And what people here at the YMCA and around the city want you to know is that the demand and the need for these supplies, they’re going to continue for weeks, if not months, going into the future.
Right now, the need is for bottled water, and we just heard that they also need underwear for people of all ages, men and women and socks. So you have 3 big needs right now.
And on a lighter note, and happier note, one of the drivers of a veteran, his wife just gave birth to a baby girl over the weekend. He’ll certainly have a story to tell his baby girl.
A group of wildland firefighters from the Bureau of Land Management Nevada are still in California lending a hand.
