LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A man using a wheelchair was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver in the central valley Sunday night, police say.

Around 11:11 p.m. on Sunday, officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to a crash involving a male pedestrian using a wheelchair near Fremont Street and Oakey Boulevard.

According to LVMPD, the pedestrian was crossing Boulder Highway, south of Oakey, outside of a marked crosswalk, while a 2013 KIA Optima was traveling north in the same lanes. The crash occurred when the pedestrian entered the path of the KIA and was struck.

Arriving medical crews pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.

Police say the KIA driver remained in the area, but showed signs of impairment and was arrested on DUI charges.

Roads around the area were closed overnight, but reopened around 4:15 a.m.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
