LAUGHLIN (FOX5)— The driver in a viral crash that sent a car airborne into a Laughlin homeowner’s pool has officially been charged nearly two months after the incident.
Brittany Schrecengost faces multiple charges, including DUI, speeding, expired registration, and no insurance, according to court records. The crash occurred on December 15th when Schrecengost blew through homeowner Cletis Reed’s backyard wall, went airborne, and landed in his pool.
Police reports obtained by FOX5 show Schrecengost admitted to drinking two beers and a shot of Jameson before the crash.
Homeowner struggles with aftermath
Reed said the incident has had lasting impacts beyond the physical damage to his property.
“My upbeat personality has taken a hit. I’m like angry all the time, and I’m not like that normally,” Reed said. “The doctor said it’s basically PTSD, and literally I’m in the backyard and I’m turning my head every time there’s a car driving by.”
Reed said he and his wife invested most of their retirement money into creating their backyard oasis.
“My wife and I took the majority of our retirement to build our little resort so we can relax with our family and friends and that lady took it away and took away that secure feeling,” Reed said. “I don’t feel secure in my backyard.”
Extensive damage and repairs
The crash destroyed Reed’s backyard wall and pool house awning. His resort pool was left unusable, filled with debris and motor oil. Two months later, repairs are officially underway.
The pool drainage process took three days, with crews using a tanker truck to remove 25,000 gallons of water.
Reed said the incident has brought a lot of attention.
“I walk into a Walmart, ‘Hey, aren’t you the guy on the news?’ I’m getting stopped everywhere,” Reed said.
Financial burden
Because Schrecengost didn’t have insurance, Reed has had to pay out of pocket for repairs. His home insurance is covering some costs, but not everything.
Schrecengost will appear in court on February 19.
Court records show she faces other traffic violations from past incidents.
