LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Some drivers are traveling nearly 30 miles per hour over the posted speed limit in a construction zone on the 215, putting workers at risk as they complete road work.

FOX5 used a radar gun to capture multiple vehicles exceeding the 55 mph speed limit around Stephanie on the 215. The road drops from 65 mph to 55 between Stephanie and Pecos due to ongoing construction work.

Speeders clocked at dangerous speeds

Within minutes of setting up near Stephanie, FOX5 spotted drivers traveling 68, 69 and 70 mph in the construction zone. This was observed by a speed sign along the highway.

With a radar gun, FOX5 saw several cars going 70 to over 80 miles per hour. One car was traveling 82 and another 83 mph.

Workers express safety concerns

Henry Paulino, who was working just feet from the speeding traffic, said the behavior puts construction crews in danger.

“I just feel like it’s pretty crazy because a lot of people are very inconsiderate about all the people that are working on the sidelines. Anything can happen. Even though the barriers are still here, it’s still a little dangerous.”

Paulino added, “If you see the cones slow it down. I know everybody runs on time, but we all have somewhere to go too, our families and all of that.”

Fines and enforcement

Henderson Municipal Court officials said fines in the 215 work zone range from $245 to $525. They also said if police choose to cite a driver for “endangering life, limb, and property,” they could face a fine of $890.

Nevada Highway Patrol, with assistance from the Henderson Police Department, patrols the construction zone. Troopers said the new traffic task force may target the area, if it hasn’t already.
