LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Last August a valley man drowned in Lake Mead after a sudden storm knocked him off his paddleboard.
Greg Bell was not wearing a life jacket at the time.
Now Serena Bell is teaming up with the Assistance League of Las Vegas to raise awareness that free life jackets are available at Lake Mead.
“One of the biggest factors on that is the unpredictable weather there. The weather changes like this (snaps) and that’s what happened to us that day. It was a beautiful day and we got caught in a storm and this is one of the biggest reasons this happens at Lake Mead.” said Serena Bell, Widow of Drowning Victim.
Bell’s wife and four of his family members were with him when he fell off his paddleboard and disappeared. He was not wearing a life jacket at the time.
Serena bell told FOX5 she was wearing one and it saved her life.
“I had a jacket on, I wouldn’t be here today if I didn’t. I’m not strong swimmer, and there was only one jacket available, and I took it.” shared Bell.
According to Bell there are seven locations around the lake where visitors can borrow the vests free of charge. She hopes to make the Life Jacket Loaner Stations more identifiable and easy to find.
