LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A pedestrian was seriously injured after being hit by a car near Charleston and Mojave on Wednesday afternoon, according to Metro Police, marking the second crash in less than a month on the same stretch of road where a 10-year-old boy was killed.

Metro Police said the crash happened at around 2:26 p.m. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and appears to have been crossing outside of a marked crosswalk. The driver stayed on scene and showed no signs of impairment.

Residents who witnessed the crash described the impact.

“I did see her get hit. I saw her fly in the air,” said Dee Harvey, a resident in the area. “Her head went into the windshield.”

Harvey said she did not think the victim would survive.

Residents demand change after second crash

The crash happened on the same corridor where 10-year-old Simeon Young was killed less than a month ago while crossing toward a convenience store with friends. Family members said he crossed outside a marked crosswalk because the nearest ones were many blocks away in either direction.

Residents have now started a petition calling for safer crossings.

“It feels a little bit neglected at this point,” said Harvey. “We’ve had the second tragedy happen in less than a month’s time. And I’m just so scared that there’s going to be a child, another child killed.”

Neighbors said faded crosswalks, along with missing sidewalks and bike lanes, make the area dangerous for pedestrians. Over 10 cars drove past one resident’s attempt to cross.

“This is the only city I’ve ever lived in where crosswalks, you can’t even see a crosswalk because it’s not been updated. It’s not been painted,” Harvey said.

Community relies on walking, public transportation

Residents said the safety issues are especially dangerous in a neighborhood where many people rely on walking or public transportation.

“We’re a disenfranchised community here. A lot of us are on foot. A lot of us are, you know, maybe don’t have a car,” Harvey said. “So when we’re riding the public transportation, you know, even to catch that bus, you know, you’re taking your life in your hands trying to cross Charleston Boulevard.”

Petition organizers said they want action before another tragedy takes place.

“I really feel like another child is going to be killed in this street. And that we need to take that time to, you know, all come together and work on this solution,” Harvey said.

Petition organizers said they want to work with different entities that could help update roads and create more light-up crosswalks. They are also advocating for reduced speed limits on Charleston, saying traffic moves too fast in an area where many people are on foot.
